Motherhood Guidebook

Mama-and-baba (or mama and kiddo) session!
Theres something so powerful about a motherhood session. It just boosts your confidence as a mom, and lets you relax knowing you've timestamped the era.
Whether it's an intimate bathing, breastfeeding, skin-to skin, bonding shoot... or you and your kids playing in the garden/ running through a field or baking in the kitchen....
this is THE most special and fleeting part of it all. It's so important to capture this, just you and your littles
because we all know dad's not doing it (haha trust that there are hundreds of photos of dad and the kids taken by you, why do we all have to beg our men to take photos of us unposed/in the moments of motherhood? I'll tell ya now, they never do.)
But seriously, this is not only their childhood, it's our MOTHERHOOD too, and we should freeze that for when we're old and grey and paging through albums thinking of the good ol' days.
We're growing up too mama, not just them.
And no, theres no time limit on the age of your kids! Just because they're teens doesn't mean they're not still your bebes.
Option 1: At home
How to prep your home
declutter :: distractions in images take away from the heart of an image. My camera won't be able to tell if you vacuumed- but having excess trinkets, bags, clutter, phone CHARGERS tucked in a closet will keep the photo clean.
window light :: turn off all artificial lighting! we will work only with what comes through your windows straight from heaven.
open the Shades :: since we want only window light, we need as much of it as possible! have all the shades open as much as they can be!
Option 2: Outdoors
Let's pick a place.
I like to shoot at my field in Delta Park. It always has something to offer no matter the season.
Or perhaps you have another place in mind? Lets brainstorm.
If it's outdoors I only shoot in the late afternoon because of the sun.
These have a powerful dynamic to them that I adore. Mother earth type of energy. Outdoor light is always a dream.
Perhaps you're feeling adventurous and want to breastfeed/do skin-to-skin in nature?
Or perhaps you want to let your kids wear some beautiful color and chase you around, catching all the in-the-moment movement. .
Showing some skin
Decide ahead of time if you want more intimate photos
They can be nursing, bathing or just cuddling. The vulnerable ones can have some of the most emotion felt in them. It helps to decide ahead of time something to wear and what you are comfortable with. Tasteful skin exposure would be clavicle bones, shoulders, necks, arms, or legs.
If you want to bath or have skin to skin of feeding sessions... lets decide all that and capture it.
If you want to go super simple and intimate, but effective: a plain white sheet looks amazing.
What to wear
The styling of the shoot can take good photos and make them incredible photos. It can take some consideration so preparing a while before the shoot can help!
for the toddlers/kids/teens :: texture and movement both photograph beautifully. texture being linens, knits, wools, denims. movement is dresses or robes that have a flow to them. dresses for your girls. avoid super bright colors as they can reflect on each others faces. Pastels, white/cream, neutrals, gingham, floral! all yes!
if we're at home then please be barefoot and comfortable.
for mama :: sometimes my mamas like having a more relaxed look and a dressy look, feel free to do both looks! robe's are always gorgeous for at home relaxed look and add some intimacy to the photos.
for babe :: make sure the clothes fit! it's hard to know if they will be in newborn size still or 0-3 months already, and its common to buy up so they can grow into it, but clothes that don't fit will just make them look swallowed! avoid logos or clothes with words on them. i love having a lot of seeing baby’s skin because the wrinkles and rolls are everything. muslin swaddles are photogenic as well.
Bloomers! if you have a little girly in a dress with a diaper underneath - throw some bloomers over it so we don’t end up with a diaper ad. for whatever reason, a blue pee line just doesn’t photograph adorably
